Gliding is a phonological process, or common error pattern, in young children. Many children will make a /W/ sound instead of an /L/ or an /R/ sound. This is typical for young children but should self-correct with age. For example, if your five-year-old says, “lion” like, “wion,” you may want to reach out to a speech therapist for an evaluation.
