Sign Language for Babies

Did you know that babies can learn sign language before spoken words? Sign language can be beneficial for both babies and caregivers alike, as it allows babies to express their wants and needs. Common signs to teach babies include, “more,” “milk,” and “all done.” Caregivers can teach signs to their babies by using a hand-over-hand approach. For example, if a caregiver believes the baby would like “more,” snacks, they can say, “More?” and move the babies hands into the sign, and then offer more snacks. This behavior will reinforce the sign. If you have questions or concerns about your baby’s speech and language development, reach out to a speech therapist.
