Birds are a fun topic to study while targeting speech and language goals. Families can learn about different species of birds in the wild, as well as enjoy storybook bird friends. My own personal favorite is Make Way for Ducklings! During reading, children can practice speech sounds, describe pictures, and retell the story in their own words. Following the books, children and their families can learn about bird habitats, diet, and fun facts. Bird crafts are a wonderful opportunity to address following directions and describing skills.
Below are suggestions of books featuring birds. Happy reading!
“Make Way for Ducklings,” by Robert McCloskey
“Sylvia and Bird,” by Catherine Rayner
“Owl Moon,” by Jane Yolen
“Are You My Mother?,” by P.D. Eastman
